How Tech-Takeback's circular approach keeps technology in use and communities connected.

On October 14th 2025, Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 - the same day the world marks International E-waste Day. As millions of devices become obsolete, countless others sit unused in offices across Brighton and Hove and the wider South-East, often hoarded due to data security concerns or uncertainty about disposal.
If unmanaged, this surge in end-of-life technology will only add to the escalating E-waste crisis. With devices increasingly built to break rather than last, we need circular systems that keep valuable technology in use and out of landfill.
That's precisely where Tech-Takeback (TTB), a Brighton-based not-for-profit, is leading the change.
This October, to mark both the end of Windows 10 support and International E-waste Day, Tech-takeback is offering FREE laptop collection, certified data erasure and impact reporting services to SMEs in Brighton & Hove and across South-East Sussex - helping local businesses protect their data, reduce E-waste and strengthen community resilience.
Closing the Loop on Electrical Waste
Tech-Takeback champions a circular approach to technology: securely collected, data erased and refurbished wherever possible. Rather than becoming landfill waste, they're given a second life - supporting people who lack access to technology and digital
opportunities.

Every reused device avoids unnecessary carbon emissions, reduces resource demand, and supports the local community. Through reuse, donated laptops enable those digitally excluded to apply for jobs, complete education or training courses, access vital healthcare and housing services, and reconnect with friends and family - breaking the cycle of digital poverty.
Why Data Erasure Matters for Local Businesses
With Windows 10 support ending, many businesses face a serious data security risk. Unused devices are not just wasted assets; they can expose sensitive information if not properly handled.
Tech-takeback's secure collection and certified erasure process provides complete peace of mind for your business. Devices are safely transported, wiped to industry standards (with certification provided), and given new life wherever possible—turning potential risks into social good and environmental benefit.
Local Impact in Action

Oliver became homeless after a back injury forced him out of work. He was referred to Tech-Takeback by a local charity, and they provided him with a donated laptop and internet access.
After 6 months of using the reused device, he told us his story:
“My life just fell apart. I was a plasterer, and I didn’t know how to do anything else. This laptop was a Godsend. I reconnected with my daughter, completed online training, and got a new job. I’m moving into a new flat tomorrow. I’ll never forget what you did for me, and I wish I could thank the person who donated their laptop. They probably saved my life, and they’ll never know.”
In a CIWM-funded pilot, Tech-Takeback refurbished and redistributed 60 donated devices to people experiencing digital exclusion, each device generating £43,000 of Social Value. The results emphasise how tech reuse not only reduces waste, it also creates opportunities, connectivity and community resilience.
